More precisely: you slip into the role of a crime scene cleaner who has to put the whole mess back in order after a crime. Sounds macabre, and it is – but in a surprisingly entertaining and sometimes even funny way.
The game combines a rather unusual setting with classic simulation elements. So you have to mop, wipe, scrub and make sure you don’t overlook anything. Because in the end, you’re judged on how thoroughly you worked. Sounds simple, but this mix is exactly what makes the game exciting.
Gameplay: Cleaning without limits
The heart of Crime Scene Cleaner is clearly the gameplay. You end up at various crime scenes one after another: sometimes in an apartment, sometimes in a rundown motel, sometimes in a dark basement. Everywhere the same picture – blood, fingerprints, shards, and a whole lot of chaos.
The task is always the same: clean everything so thoroughly that no one can suspect a crime ever happened. That means taking mop and sponge in hand, rearranging furniture, disposing of traces, and paying attention to the smallest details. Sometimes you also have to pick up things like bullet casings or cigarette butts – basically everything that could put investigators on the trail.
There’s also a point system. The better you work, the more rewards you unlock. This gives the whole thing a certain addictive factor. Once you start, you’ll want to leave the crime scene 100% spotless. And that’s not easy at all, because you often overlook tiny details in dark corners or under furniture.
What’s cool: the game doesn’t take itself too seriously. Despite the macabre theme, there’s a touch of dark humor that lightens things up. When you’re scrubbing away at a blood puddle for minutes and the protagonist makes a funny comment, you just have to chuckle.
Graphics and atmosphere
From a cleaning simulator you might not expect too much graphically. But Crime Scene Cleaner is surprisingly positive. The environments are detailed and feel authentic without going too far into brutality. Sure, blood and chaos are part of it, but nothing is unnecessarily over the top. This makes the game suitable even for people who aren’t hardcore horror fans.
The atmosphere is pretty dense overall. Every crime scene has its own look, and it’s fun to discover the differences. In an old mansion, the whole thing feels different than in a small apartment. On top of that, the fitting soundscape: creaking floors, distant police sirens, or a dripping faucet. All small details that make you really immerse yourself while playing.
However, don’t expect high-end graphics like in AAA titles. Crime Scene Cleaner is more in the solid mid-range. But honestly, that fits the gameplay perfectly. After all, this is about the gameplay and not bombastic effects.

The mix of attention to detail and humor is also successful. Sometimes you catch yourself getting annoyed about a tiny, stubborn bloodstain texture, only to breathe a sigh of relief once everything shines. That feeling of perfection is what drives you.
Of course, there are a few weaknesses. Over time, the gameplay can get a bit repetitive. If you’re not into tiny details, you might eventually get annoyed. Also, the controls and physics can be a bit clunky. When you knock over the same bucket for the tenth time, it can get frustrating.
Still: the replay value is there, because every crime scene is set up a bit differently. And anyone who enjoys neat work and a little dark humor will definitely be entertained, is thwat I found out in my review.
