“Lost Judgment” is the sequel to the popular spin-off of the “Yakuza” series and continues the story around Takayuki Yagami, the detective with a former lawyer background. Anyone who played the predecessor knows: here you get dark crime atmosphere mixed with crazy side quests, and the whole thing is typically over-the-top Japanese. I took a closer look in my review and will tell you whether it’s worth buying.
The Story – A Balancing Act Between Drama and Madness
The plot of “Lost Judgment” starts off with quite a bang: a teacher is accused of sexually harassing a student. But shortly after, it comes to light that this same teacher is also connected to a brutal murder case. And this is where Yagami comes in, who starts investigating together with his friends.
The story constantly walks a fine line between serious, socially relevant themes such as bullying, suicide, or sexual harassment, and at the same time wacky side plots that almost pull you out of the serious tone. Anyone who has played a “Yakuza” game knows this up and down. One moment you’re sitting in front of the screen with teary eyes because the story is so gripping, and five minutes later you’re chasing after a dancing robot dog in a side quest.
This mix is exactly what makes it so appealing. Sometimes it feels almost too jumpy, but the main story is extremely exciting and keeps you hooked until the end. What’s especially cool: the game picks up realistic issues from Japanese everyday life that you won’t find in every video game.
Gameplay – Detective Work Meets Street Fights
Gameplay-wise, “Lost Judgment” is quite a wild mix. On the one hand, a lot feels classic like in “Yakuza”: open world, many side quests, tons of mini-games. On the other hand, the detective angle brings a few new mechanics into the game, but they don’t always really work.
As Yagami, you’re often on the hunt for clues: you have to tail people, take photos of evidence, or sneak into buildings. Sounds exciting on paper, but in practice, it can feel a little dull. Especially the stealth sections feel more like filler content, because they don’t have the same appeal as the fights.
And that brings us to the best part of the gameplay: the fights. Yagami has several martial arts styles up his sleeve that you can switch between at will. Sometimes you go for elegant karate combos, sometimes you dodge fluidly, or you go full offense with an acrobatic style. The fights are smoothly animated, extremely powerful, and just plain fun. Especially the finisher moves look wonderfully over the top again – exactly the way you want them.
The side activities are typically “Yakuza”: playing darts, dancing in the school club, going boxing, or just spending a few hours playing Tekken in the arcade – there’s always something to do. If you’re into variety, you’ll have a blast here.
World and Atmosphere – Between Neon Lights and High School Drama
The game world is, as usual, a dream for fans of Japanese city culture. Lost Judgment this time doesn’t just take place in the well-known Kamurocho, but also in Yokohama, which many players already know from “Yakuza: Like a Dragon”. Yokohama in particular feels even more alive, full of details, with plenty of opportunities to just drift around.
The high school setting is especially interesting. Yagami surprisingly spends a lot of time here, since a large part of the story revolves around the students and their problems. This gives the game a fresh touch because you’re not just wandering through dark alleys and bars, but also classrooms and sports fields.
The atmosphere overall is top-notch. From the neon lights of the big city to the quiet streets in the side districts and the colorful mini-games, everything fits together perfectly. The voice acting (both Japanese and English) is really strong, although the Japanese voice actors deliver even more authenticity.
Strengths and Weaknesses – What Sticks?
“Lost Judgment” has many strengths but also a few weaknesses. On the positive side, there’s definitely the gripping main story, which skillfully combines drama and suspense. The fights are varied, powerful, and simply fun, and the side activities once again offer tons of content, so you can easily spend 50+ hours in the game.
The weaknesses mainly lie in the new detective mechanics. They’re a nice idea, but often feel unfinished or not particularly exciting. By the third boring tailing mission, you’ll be wishing for the next brawl instead.
Also, the tone isn’t always perfectly balanced. Some players might be bothered by the fact that you jump from a very serious topic straight into a totally wacky side quest. Fans of the series know that this is part of the package – but newcomers might find it a bit odd.

A Must for Yakuza Fans, With Small Flaws
“Lost Judgment” is a worthy sequel that continues the strengths of its predecessor while bringing in new ideas. It has its rough edges, but that’s part of its charm. Anyone who has always loved the mix of serious crime, over-the-top fights, and bizarre side quests will definitely get their money’s worth here.
The detective elements could have used a bit more polish, and the back and forth between drama and comedy isn’t always perfectly balanced. But all in all, “Lost Judgment” is a great game that is absolutely worth it for fans of the series – and also offers newcomers an exciting story with plenty of variety.
