One Piece Odyssey is the latest role-playing game from the world of One Piece, taking fans of the legendary anime and manga franchise on a brand-new adventure. The game was developed by Bandai Namco and promises to bring the colorful and chaotic world of Monkey D. Luffy and his crew to home consoles and PCs. But does One Piece Odyssey really deliver, or is it just another licensed game riding on the name of the series? For my review I took a closer look at the game.
Story and Setting: A Classic One Piece Journey
As expected from One Piece, Odyssey takes us on a big adventure. The Straw Hat Pirates end up stranded on a mysterious island full of puzzles and enemies. The story is told in a very “anime-typical” way: full of colorful characters, absurd humor, over-the-top emotions, and unpredictable twists.
The island setting is varied, from dense jungles to caves and mysterious ruins. The developers worked to make the world feel alive. NPCs have different dialogues, and the interactions within the crew convey the dynamics of the series well. Anyone who has watched the anime will immediately feel at home.
However, there are also points of criticism: the story sometimes drags and isn’t always exciting. Some quests feel more like filler, and fans of the series may be disappointed that the main characters are sometimes reduced to simpler roles to fit the combat system.

Gameplay: Turn-Based Battles Meet Puzzles
The heart of One Piece Odyssey is, of course, the combat system. The game uses turn-based battles where each character has unique abilities and combos. Fans of Luffy’s Gum-Gum powers will especially enjoy it: stretch attacks, explosive special moves, and team combos make the battles genuinely fun at times.
Besides battles, there are puzzles and small tasks on the island. Some puzzles are cleverly designed and require a bit of thinking, while others are rather trivial and slow down the game flow. Here, you can feel that the balance between action, strategy, and story isn’t perfect yet.
The controls are mostly intuitive, both on the controller and with mouse and keyboard. However, there are occasionally minor technical issues: character animations can stutter, the camera isn’t always optimally positioned, and loading times between battles and exploration can be a bit long.
Graphics, Sound, and Atmosphere: A Lovable World with Weaknesses
Visually, One Piece Odyssey is a real highlight for fans of the anime. The character models are very close to the original, the colors really pop, and the animations feel smooth and fitting. The cutscenes are especially lovingly staged and capture the typical humor and dynamics of the series.
The music also contributes to the atmosphere. The tracks change depending on the situation and bring tension, humor, or drama at exactly the right time. The voice acting is mostly successful, with the Japanese original voices being the best choice. Some English subtitles occasionally feel clunky or don’t translate the jokes perfectly.
A big plus is the attention to detail: small animations, the crew’s reactions to events, and little Easter eggs for hardcore fans make the game feel alive. On the other hand, some backgrounds are a bit empty, and certain areas feel repetitive, making exploration less exciting.
A Must for Fans, Otherwise Mediocre
One Piece Odyssey is clearly a game made for fans of the series. Those who love the characters, know the world, and can overlook small flaws will have a lot of fun. The turn-based battles and story are solid, the atmosphere fits, and the charming portrayal of the crew brings a lot of joy.
However, the game suffers from some weaknesses: repetitive quests, technical glitches, and overall somewhat slow gameplay slow down the experience. Those who are not fans of One Piece might quickly lose interest.
