If you’ve been a fan of Genshin Impact or the Honkai games by miHoYo for a while, you’ve probably been curious about Honkai: Star Rail. The new RPG combines the beloved elements of the previous Honkai games with a turn-based combat system and a story that takes you across the galaxy. In my Honkai: Star Rail review will explain why the game is definitely worth checking out – and where it still has some minor weaknesses.
More Than Just Space Action
The story of Honkai: Star Rail takes place in a futuristic galaxy where different planets and civilizations interact with each other. You take on the role of the “Trailblazer”, a traveler searching for the lost knowledge of the galaxy. One thing that immediately stands out: the story is surprisingly deep. You can tell that miHoYo put a lot of emphasis on character development here.
The dialogues are funny, exciting, and sometimes even truly emotional. Each character has their own story, revealed over the course of quests. This creates a strong bond quickly and makes the world of Star Rail feel truly alive. The cutscenes are high-quality animated, and the music is epic, adding enormously to the atmosphere. The mix of sci-fi elements, fantasy, and humor works surprisingly well.
A minor downside is that sometimes you have to read quite a lot of text to understand the plot. If you’re not interested in a lot of story, you might get bored at times. Still, if you love RPGs, you’ll get your money’s worth here.
Strategy Meets Action
What sets Honkai: Star Rail apart from many other RPGs is the turn-based combat system. Unlike in Genshin Impact, you don’t fight in real-time here but plan your moves strategically. Each character has special abilities that need to be used cleverly. Combos and team composition play a major role, especially when facing stronger enemies or bosses.
What’s particularly cool is that the game explains the mechanics but doesn’t hold your hand. You have to decide for yourself when to attack, defend, or use special abilities. This makes it tactically challenging, but never unfair.
In addition to combat, there are numerous side quests, exploration, and mini-games on the different planets. Here you can really see miHoYo’s signature: everything is lovingly designed, the environments are varied, and the collection mechanics are very motivating. If you love loot, you’ll definitely be happy here.
A small critique: the game heavily relies on gacha mechanics. This means some characters or items can be specifically obtained through real money. Although it’s possible to get everything just by playing, anyone who wants the best characters quickly might be tempted to spend money.

A Real Eye-Catcher
Graphically, Honkai: Star Rail is an absolute treat. The character designs are, as usual from miHoYo, of high quality, and the planets and environments are detailed and varied. You can tell that a lot of love went into the details: from glowing nebulae in the galaxy to small animations in villages.
The soundtrack is also impressive. Epic music accompanies battles, while calmer pieces provide relaxation during exploration. The character voice acting – at least in English – is solid, and the dialogues feel lively, adding greatly to immersion.
Performance is surprisingly good, both on PC and mobile devices. Occasional loading times between planets exist but hardly disrupt the gameplay. So if you have a device from the last few years, you should have no problems.
Star Rail Takes Off
Honkai: Star Rail is a game that convinces both fans of the previous Honkai series and newcomers. The mix of turn-based combat, a deep story, epic music, and great graphics makes the game a true highlight. Sure, the gacha elements can be annoying, and if you’re not into story, you might get bored at times, but the strengths clearly outweigh the weaknesses.
For anyone who loves tactical RPGs, enjoys collecting, and wants to dive into a well-told sci-fi world, Honkai: Star Rail is an absolute must-download. I give it a well deserved 4.5 out of 5 stars in my review – a small but fine step into the galaxy that leaves you wanting more.
