“Unravel Two” isn’t your typical action-packed game with explosions, lasers or a dramatic soundtrack. Instead, you get a calm, beautifully staged adventure full of heart, clever puzzles and a unique co-op experience. The game comes from Coldwood Studios and was published by Electronic Arts – and even though the first part already had a bit of a fanbase, “Unravel Two” takes it all a step further. Here’s my review.
But what’s it all about? You play as a small red yarn hero – a so-called Yarny – who isn’t alone in this second part. Right at the beginning, you meet a second Yarny, and from that point on, everything happens in pairs. Whether locally in co-op mode or alone controlling both characters at once – the game requires teamwork and clever thinking.
Two Little Yarn Heroes, One Big World
The story of “Unravel Two” isn’t told through long dialogues or cutscenes – it’s all very subtle. In the background, you see shadowy scenes from the lives of two kids who are in some kind of trouble. These events mirror the gameplay and overall atmosphere. It’s a kind of parallel narrative that you can interpret – but you don’t have to. The focus is clearly on experiencing, not storytelling.
What really matters, though, is what happens between the two Yarnys – and that’s where the game shines. It’s about teamwork, helping each other and trust. And that’s exactly what the gameplay reflects: you have to climb, swing, push, pull and solve puzzles that just aren’t doable solo. Especially if you’re playing with a friend, it can be a blast. You need to communicate, think together and sometimes fail together – which, in this case, can actually be pretty fun.
You can play solo, but controlling two characters at once can get a bit tricky over time. You can connect the Yarnys to make walking through levels easier, but with more difficult puzzles, you’ll probably wish for a real human partner.
Puzzles, Platforming and a Dash of Frustration
In terms of difficulty, “Unravel Two” is pretty balanced – most of the time. The early levels gently guide you into the game and teach you the core mechanics step by step. But the further you get, the more challenging the puzzles become. And sometimes – honestly – it can get a bit annoying.
Some parts really require good timing and precision, especially when you’re swinging on ropes or pulling each other up. If your motor skills aren’t top notch or you hold the controller the wrong way for a second, you’ll quickly end up back at the last checkpoint. Luckily, those checkpoints are generously placed, but still – a few sections might have you cursing a bit.
That said, when you finally solve a tough puzzle, you’ll feel like a little champion. The reward is usually just getting to the next section – but that’s enough, because the game has such a chill and cozy vibe. There are also optional challenge levels you can unlock, and some of them are really tough. So if you’re into more demanding gameplay, there’s definitely something here for you.
Graphics, Music, and That Special Something
Visually, “Unravel Two” is a small piece of art. The levels are inspired by real-life landscapes – sometimes you’re walking through a mossy forest, other times along abandoned train tracks or inside an old factory. Everything looks incredibly detailed, almost photorealistic. And the little yarn characters move so smoothly and lifelike, you just can’t help but fall in love with them.
The music really brings it all together: gentle guitar melodies, melancholic piano parts, and occasionally a bit of drama – it all fits the emotional journey perfectly. The sound effects – like the soft rustling of yarn or the splashing of water – also add to the immersive atmosphere.
What makes this game stand out is that it doesn’t feel like you’re just playing a game, but like you’re part of a small, meaningful story. No massive open world, no over-the-top drama – just two little yarn beings trying to stick together while making their way through a big world.
A Quiet Adventure with Heart
“Unravel Two” isn’t a game that keeps you hooked for hours with nonstop action or unexpected plot twists. It’s a calm, sometimes challenging, but always lovingly crafted adventure that really shines in co-op mode. If you enjoy puzzling together and don’t mind slower-paced gameplay, you should definitely give this one a go.
